Compelled speech

This came up in a discussion with a friend, and I'm curious what others think about it.

What is your definition of "compelled speech", and what do you think of it (both your definition and in general)? Are there variants that you consider more acceptable, or less?

I have a narrow personal definition of compelled speech. I view it strictly as speech mandated by government force or threat of same (usually criminal suits, but also in some cases civil suits by government actors), and I detest that. I'm more or less OK with civil suits by non-government actors (unless they're vexatious, frivolous, or started by someone with deep pockets against someone who isn't) and non-government job consequences, and I have no problem with people being exposed to speech opposed to their own, or being made to suffer social consequences (eg, shunning or deplatforming).

I think I'm convinced of the purpose of what they call "manners". Meaning a certain level of politeness maintained in contact with every person you meet (whether real life or online).
Other than that - say what's on your mind. (This includes for me being able to practice constructive and objective criticism. Just simple cursing and calling you a melonfarmer doesn't qualify as "say what's on your mind" for me. That's primitive tainting-you-with-dirt.)
